Jubilee on 2009 - Montreal - 60 years
Sister Rita Provencher
In 1948 Rita Provencher arrived in Quebec to enter the Novitiate of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary. As a young religious, obedience sent her to our foundation in Ottawa. Later, she brought her talents of cook and Vocation Promoter to Montreal.
1963 sounded the bell for her departure to the Middle East. Sr. Rita worked with orphans in Beirut, Lebanon, until the Lord surprised her by calling her to Egypt. Her skills as homemaker, seamstress, kindergarten teacher, parish sacristan, and so forth ... would bring her to work, first in Alexandria and Upper Egypt, then in Armant, a village of 14,000 inhabitants. There she added to her experiences work for the advancement of women and support to the villagers. During 12 years, services were rendered with discretion and with a sense and a taste for work well done, by this woman with a Gospel mentality: give my best with the gifts which I have received from God.
The bell rang to bring her back to her homeland. A well deserved sabbatical year awaited her before she settled down in fraternity living in Montreal North. There, her multiple skills were once more utilized. She undertook service to patients in the Inter-Laval Hospital and worked there for 14 years. This Sister with a happy and friendly face knew how to blossom and relax and how to help others to do so. No wonder she received an invitation to enlist as a volunteer at the Father's House, where unconditional love is shown to the homeless and poor of the metropolis. She is still there and is also always available for internal services such as hairdressing, sewing, etc.. for her own Sisters
Sr. Rita gives thanks for her 60 years of active and contemplative life where the Lord has fulfilled her servant, and with Mary she sings: "My soul glorifies the Lord for He has done great things for me! "
